Hi Guys!
Guess what?! Not only is this my very first blog post on Soveryjo.com, but this is also my very first pattern test! Woohoo!! OK, sorry. I got a little excited.
I got the opportunity to test Grammie’s Dolls Abram’s Quilted Vest for my son. This is a quilted sleeveless vest with two waistline finishes and kangaroo pockets. You can make a curved hem or a straight hem with side buttons. The best part is that this pattern is on sale until 12/9 so go and grab it! You won’t be sorry you did.
I cut a size 6 based on his measurements. Now, the instructions state that you should probably have a walking foot. I am so glad I have one because it made the quilting go a lot faster and easier. I have never done any quilting before and it wasn’t a difficult process at all. The fabric I chose was a camo denim a purchased for myself last year from Joann Fabric from the clearance section. I purchased it so I could make a jumpsuit. So much for that. lol It was perfect for this project. I could not find a link for the fabric on the site.
It was also my first time using batting. I had a few firsts with this project. I purchased my batting at Joann’s as well during Black Friday. I did not know how much I would need so I purchased a baby size bag which is 45″ x 60″ and had plenty left over. The batting was very easy to use. I just cut it using the pattern piece as instructed and it worked like a charm.
I thought the bias binding tape to finish the seams was genius. The possibilities are endless on the fabric and bias binding tape combinations. I thought this camo and black combination was perfect for my little guy. He can wear it with almost anything. I also love the fact that the vest is sleeveless. Perfect for our South Florida winters.
This pattern is listed as being for an advance beginner and I think that’s pretty accurate. You will need to know the following to be successful at making this vest.
- Have a walking foot. It is not necessary, but it sure does make it a lot easier.
- How to install a zipper.
- How to use bias binding.
The pattern does include very clear images and clear instructions on how to sew this up, but knowing how to do the things listed above will help you out. If you don’t know how to do any of those things, remember, YouTube and Google are your friends. Don’t be afraid to look it up.
This vest was a quick and easy sew up and I can’t wait to make my little dude more.
