Did I ever tell you about that time I won 3rd place in a fashion show? Not just any fashion show. First of all, this was my VERY 1st fashion show ever. Second of all, this wasn’t just any fashion show. It was the fashion show at Mimi G’s 6th Annual Fashion, Sewing and Style Conference! Can you believe that? I still can’t. In order to be in the fashion you, you have to obviously be attending the conference and you have to make something from a Mimi G tutorial or one of her Simplicity patterns. Since I didn’t have time to make 2 looks, I decided that I needed to make the entire outfit myself. After looking through patterns I decided to go with Simplicity Pattern 8381 Misses’ Dress or Top view B. I knew I wanted to make this top the minute I saw this pattern. I think it’s so beautiful and classy.
For the skirt I went with Simplicity Pattern 8394 Misses’ Top and Skirt.
I made my top using a black matte satin fabric I purchased at Joann Fabric. I knew it would be perfect for this top since the pattern picture is made using a satin fabric also. This top was very easy to make and is very on trend since it is off the shoulder. This is my second Cynthia Rowley pattern I’ve sewn and I’m starting to be a big fan of her patterns.
When I first saw the skirt for Mimi G Style for Simplicity 8394, I knew that this would be part of my look for the fashion how. This skirt has an amazing silhouette and I knew that it would fit just right.
Funny story. Based on my measurements, I was in between a size 18 and a 20w. So this meant I was going to need a pattern for sizes 10-18 and a pattern for sizes 20w – 28W. I made my very first muslin ever in a size 20 and it was too big so I sized it down to an 18 and it was perfect. I made my skirt using this amazing Double Sided Sparkle Sequin fabric I purchased at Michael Levine in LA and can be found here. So I started to cut my beautiful fabric and noticed that it had some stretch in it! Well, I made my size 18 and it was too big. I ended up taking it in and ended up with a size 16.
My favorite part of this skirt is 1. The hip hugging fit. 2. The front split. 3. The way the bottom moves when I walk. OK, that was more than 1 favorite thing but how can I have just 1? This skirt is amazing in every way. Super easy sew and it’s just classic and sophisticated.
Here is a photo of Mimi and I on the night of the fashion show. This was such an amazing night. There were SO many talented ladies and it was great to watch everyone in their awesome self made outfits. This will definitely be one of the nights I will forever remember.
