I am so happy to finally be able to share my DIY Rockabilly Halter Dress which was featured in the Vintage Made Magazine issue 10. Sometime last summer there was a tester call for this amazing dress and I sheepishly raised my virtual hand. I had never made anything vintage before and wasn’t even sure this was my style, but I stilled signed up. I love doing pattern tests because I always learn a new sewing technique and I’m usually testing something I would have never thought to sew for myself.
My first move was to try and find the perfect fabric. I remember seeing this cherry and polka dot fabric at Walmart and liking it but having no idea what I would make with it. I found the fabric I wanted but I wanted a contrasting fabric. Since the cherry fabric had little polka dots on it, I thought the larger polka dot fabric would look great with it. Honestly, I took a risk because I was way out of my comfort zone. I love the way two different contrasting fabrics look, I just never thought I would be able to pull it off. I think I did a pretty good job.
I especially love the sweetheart neckline and the princess seam bodice. These are both firsts for me. I made several muslins for this pattern to ensure that I got the fit just right. I ended up cutting a size 5 and graded to a size 6 based on my measurements.
The circle skirt lends to the vintage feel of the dress and I think it completes the look. I love a good circle skirt, don’t you?
When the tester call came out we were told that the pattern would be for Vintage Made, A 100% Australian Owned Vintage Magazine. We were also informed that there was a possibility of our photos being published in the magazine.
Guess what? I was fortunate enough to be selected as on of the ladies to be featured in Vintage Made! I was super excited when I found out. Since this an Australian publication I could not purchase it at any local bookstore. I had to order the magazine and wait for it to be shipped. I am so lucky to be in such great company with these amazing sewist. When you purchase the magazine you receive a free copy of the pattern.
What do you think of my dress? Have you ever sewing something vintage to wear? Let me know in the comments below.
