Hey! I recently got the opportunity to pattern test the Bruges Bomber Jacket from Kommatia Patterns. Now, I’ve been part of the pattern testing team for a while now, but I haven’t had the opportunity to test for them before. Kommatia Patterns has very modern and minimalist patterns which are very much on trend. The patterns are sold in PDF format and come in English or French. I am super happy I participated in this pattern test and I can’t wait to make more Kommatia Patterns.
Bruges Bomber Jacket – Fabric
As soon as I was accepted to do the pattern test, I started thinking about what fabric I was going to use. My friend went to Paris last summer and I asked her to buy me some pretty fabric and this was one of the pieces she brought be back. Now, I’m not 100% sure what kind of fabric it is. I know that it is satin, but the fabric is also thick like an upholstery fabric and has a great weight to it. I am also not sure what it even says. lol I read somewhere that when there is a signature on a fabric, it’s the signature of the designer. At any rate, I love the color and the signature on the fabric. This fabric is the perfect weight for our South Florida winters.
Bruges Bomber Jacket – Construction
As with just about any pattern I pick up, there are usually a few “firsts” for me. The Bruges Bomber Jacket Pattern did not disappoint in that department. First of all, although it’s on my #2018MakeNine list, this is my very first jacket! I’ve been wanting a bomber jacket since last year and I’m very happy I finally got to make one. This pattern also has welt pockets and snap fastenings at the pockets and collar. Welt pockets and this size snaps are a first also.
Can we talk about my pattern matching skills?!!! I’ve never sewn with a fabric where I’ve had to match the pattern on the fabric to make the seams uniform. I don’t know about you, but I cringe when I see someone wearing a garment where the stripes or plaids don’t match. It drives me insane and for this very reason, I’ve shied away from such fabrics. I didn’t really think about it until I had already cut out the from and back of my fabric. When I put the fabric pieces together, I noticed that the signature did not match across the front. The horror!! Thank goodness I had plenty of fabric and I ended up using those pieces for my lining. I then fixed my fabric and cut my pattern pieces again. I recalled Mimi G had posted a while ago on how to match stripes ( found here) and used the same principles with this fabric. I mean, the signature doesn’t necessary match, BUT at least it is uniform across. I think it came out great! Don’t you think?
Another first is that the jacket is fully lined. I think it gives the garment such a professional look. I also really enjoy the collar of the jacket. Makes me think of a Moto jacket (which I also want to make) and makes it a little more than just a regular bomber jacket.
What more can I say about my amazing Bruges Bomber Jacket? Oh, that it’s currently on sale and you can pick up your copy HERE. Kommatia Patterns gets an A+ from me. Having worked with several indie pattern companies I’ve learned a lot of what I don’t like and what I do like about a pattern company. Kommatia Patterns really gets it. The pattern instructions are very detailed and have great illustrations to go along with the written instructions. The instructions are also very well written and easy to follow.
Let me know if you pick up this pattern. I’d love to see your version of the Bruges Bomber Jacket.
Until next time,
Johanna
Hello So Very Jo,
I’d like to order 1 bomber jacket please. I’ll send payment if you send an invoice. It can be the same size as yours. It’s really dope.
LOL. I would love to make you a jacket. Let me get through our friends gala gown and then I’ll get to it.
Love this but what does the signature say??? Inquiring minds want to know!
Gurl, I’m just praying it doesn’t say anything horrible. When I asked my friend to ask the sales clerk what it said, they didn’t know. I was like WHAT? lol They said it is probably the name of the designer. I’m going to check the salvage edge and see if it says thing legible. lol I’ll report back.
Bahahaha! that’s funny!
Girl, this is so fabulous! Loving the red on you too.
Thank you so much Abbey. I never really thought red looked good on me until I got older.
