I recently had the pleasure of being selected to pattern test the Ella Dress by Irma & May. I stumbled across Irma & May on Instagram and saw their call for pattern testers. I’m always on the look out for new pattern indie pattern designers because I love to support our fellow creatives. Well, I’m glad I was selected because The Ella Dress is a good one.
The Ella Dress
The Ella Dress is a 3/4 sleeve A-line dress that is just the most comfortable dress I currently own. I swear. The pattern calls to make the dress in a light to mid weight jersey or light weight ponte knit. I chose to make my dress in this amazing green and black liverpool knit fabric I found in the LA Fashion District for $3 a yard! This fabric is super soft and I love the way it feel against my skin.
Based on my body measurements I made a size 18 and I didn’t make any adjustments to the pattern. I also opted to make the belt so I could cinch the dress at the waist. The pattern instructions are also very detailed and provide lots of tips to ensure success in sewing your dress. I especially like the pleated neckline and the instructions on how to attach the binding to the neckline. The instructions state to sew one shoulder together at the seam and attach the neck binding before sewing the other shoulder seam together. I think this gives to the neckline a nice finish.
Another great feature of this dress is the sleeve. There is gathering at the sleeve cap to give it a little puffy feel. I just love a good sleeve. The bottom of the sleeve is also gathered and has a nice binding detail. I’ve never made a sleeve like this and I love learning new techniques.
