Hey Guys! Happy Juneteenth! So what is Juneteenth exactly? Juneteenth (June 19, 1865) is the day troops arrived in Galveston, TX to ensure all slaves were freed. This didn’t happen until 2 1/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed stating all slaves are free. Just recently the United States declared Juneteenth a federal holiday.
In celebration of Juneteenth Queenora Renee Fabrics has released a pre order of gorgeous fabrics that you can order now! These prints are custom printed and Queenora says “With my custom fabric, I focus to help bring representation to Black people and our culture while starting a conversation on issues within the Black community”.
Fabric
I am part of Queenora’s fabric strike team and what that means is that I get to make beautiful things with her pre-released fabrics. I chose the Black Passion fabric. I love the bright colors and the mix of prints. I especially love that it has pieces of her famous Black Magic Leopard print in it. I used a bamboo knit but you can order this print in a ridiculous amount of different fabrics. They are as follows: Cotton Spandex, Bamboo Knit, Double Brushed Poly, Swim, Cotton Canvas, Broadshort, Chiffon, Rayon, Cotton Woven, Rib Knit and Bamboo French Terry. That’s a whole lot of options if you ask me.
What I Made
Initially, I thought I was going to make some workout clothes with my fabric. You know, some leggings and a sports bra. Well, once I received it, I changed my mind. I had recently gone pattern shopping and decided to use one of them. For the top I made McCall’s M8217 view C. I made a Large and I made no modifications to it at all. If you want a quick and simple project, then this is the one for you. I would say M8217 is a beginner friendly pattern. Since I had fabric left over I decided that I would make a pencil skirt to match. I went online to see if I could find a simple pattern and I came across Happiest Camper who has a free pencil skirt pattern that you can get here. I made a medium and it fit perfectly!
Oh, and I also had enough fabric to make a matching headband too. I’ve made the Drew from Seamwork several times (free pattern) but I wanted to try a different headband pattern. Back to the interwebs I went and came across Threads Monthly who offers several free patterns. There is a blog post called How to Make Twisted Turban Headbands and has a link to the free pattern with a tutorial. I like this pattern because it has elastic in the back 1″ wide. I think this makes for a better fit.
I hope you enjoyed my makes with this beautiful fabric. So, make sure you head on over to https://queenorareneefabrics.com/ and support a black owned business and pre order your custom printed fabric. On another note, now that Juneteenth is a federal holiday and many non Black businesses are looking to capitolize on this. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE shop Black owned.
Happy Juneteenth!
Until Next time,
Johanna
