Hi Guys! I know it’s been a little bit since I posted a blog post. Life has been happening, what can I say? I hope you all have been enjoying your summer so far! My Mom was recently in town and I was finally able to sew something for her. In all of the years I’ve been sewing, I haven’t had the opportunity to make her something and the time finally came!
May Sew Your View Pattern
It’s been a while since I participated in a Sew Your View sew along, but thought the May pattern would be perfect for my Mom. The pattern is Simplicity 8657, which is a caftan and has so many options to make it your own it’s called a design hacking pattern. You can make a long or short caftan or make it into a duster. The possibilities are really endless and you can check out what the ladies did over on the Sew Your View Instagram page HERE.
I made her a size large and sewed up the V-neck just a little bit because that’s what she wanted. This beautiful fabric is from the Nina Ramel fabric boxes from @mydailythreadzme. I made a dress with this print a few years ago and saved the rest for something special. I would definitely call this a special occasion. You can check out what I made HERE.
If you are looking for a simple project to make, then this is the project for you. There are only 2 pieces, the front and the back! It doesn’t get any easier than this. The most amazing part is that you can really do so many things with this simple pattern. You can make it as a maxi length caftan or a short one. You can add ruching to the side or sleeves, have the split or not or make it into a duster or robe. Think out of the box and make this your own.
Mom’s Visit
My son’s 12th birthday was on June 3rd and my Mom wanted to come and spend his birthday with him. She hadn’t come to visit in a while since the pandemic and was missing her quality time with him so she flew down from Boston for the week. I took some time off of work so we can go out and have some fun. I also had it in my head that I wanted to make us (my mom and I) matching outfits. Well, as usual, I had deadlines to meet, but I was determined to make her something because she was going on another vacation soon. Growing up, I always remembered my mom wearing lots of caftans so I wanted to make her one. I also wanted us to take a few family photos. (Insert DIY photo shoot) My mom was such a trooper. I didn’t finish her caftan until the night before she was set to leave. Her flight was at 9 am and we got up early to take these photos. She also hates her smile, which I think is silly because I think she has a beautiful smile! Anyway, she followed my directions like a pro and she twirled and smiled as instructed. Don’t you think she did a great job?
I didn’t have time to make something for myself or my son, but I made sure we all wore something I made. This was a truly proud moment for me. I wore my latest Sewn Magazine feature which is another Ogden Cami hack. I made a tutorial on how to turn the cami into a maxi dress with ruffles. My son wore a button down shirt we made earlier in the year together for a school project. You can watch that video HERE. You can also see my other Ogden Cami hacks HERE and HERE. Below are a few more shots we took that morning.
Beautiful family! Everyone has a wonderful smile.
Youvare too sweet Linda. Thank you!
