I recently had the opportunity to pattern test the Luana Dress from Designer Stitch and I’m so happy I signed up to do this pattern test. It’s been a while since I last did a pattern test for Designer Stitch and I must admit, I missed it.
The Luana Dress
The Luana Dress is this season’s holiday party dress pattern. This dress pattern has so many different options, it made it very difficult to decide which version I was going to make. Some of the different pattern options include:
- 4 Neckline Choices
- 4 Sleeve Choices
- 2 Skirt Styles and 4 Length Choices
- Cup Size Choices – A, B, C, D and DD (E)
All of the above styles are completed with:
- CB invisible or metal exposed zipper
- Choice of 2 Belt Styles
- Facings and Bind edges.
My Luana Dress and Modifications Made
For my Luana Dress I chose to make the round neck version with the 3/4 gathered flounce sleeve and the pencil skirt with a flounce. If you know anything about me, then you know I love all things flounce so it was a no brainer to go with this view for Luana Dress.
Based on my body measurements, I made a size 7 and graded to a size 8 at the waist and hips. I also shortened the bodice by an inch. For the skirt, I removed several inches from the hem of the skirt to go up to my knees before I attached the flounce to the hem. I had a navy matt satin fabric in my stash that I purchased at my local fabric store, A to Z Fabrics.
This dress is simple to make and is recommended for very advanced and experienced beginners and above due to working with specialty fabrics and the zipper. If you have experience with these items, then you should not have any issues sewing up this dress. Even if you don’t, the pattern instructions are very thorough and you should be able to successfully sew up this dress. I would also suggest making a muslin first before cutting into your fashion fabric.
