DIY Modified Ginger Top from Fibre Mood

I have always wanted to make something with faux leather and my opportunity finally came! My friends over at Fibre Mood so graciously gifted me this beautiful fabric and I decided to make the Ginger top. You know I had to hack this pattern, so I made it into a dress.

I love Fibre Mood patterns because they are so simple but are so amazing! They are very much on trend and usually are pretty easy to put together. The Ginger top did not disappoint in that aspect. This pattern is a flowy top pattern but as you can see, I decided to make it a dress. Based on my body measurements, I made a size XL. I added 2 inches to the hem to turn this top into a dress. Next, I modified the neckline because I didn’t want to add snaps to the shoulder. The last modification I made was to the sleeves. I didn’t use the sleeves that came with the pattern and instead I self-drafted flutter sleeves. I used some black fabric I had in my stash to line the sleeves because the underside of the fabric is tan, and I didn’t want that to show. In hindsight, I wish I had just used the same fabric to line the inside of the sleeves, but the black contrast is kind of cool.

Purple Imitation Leather from Fibre Mood

As I mentioned, Fibre Mood sent me this beautiful Freja -Purple Imitation Leather and I was super excited to work with it. I will not lie though; I was a little nervous the entire time. You must be very careful when sewing with faux leather because once you sew two pieces of fabric together, you really can’t un-do it because once the fabric is pierced, you’ll be able to see the needle markings. I have a few tips I used while using this fabric.

  1. Use a microtex needle.
  2. Use a walking foot to keep the fabric together while sewing.
  3. Use a little longer stitch length like 3.0 or 3.5 instead of 2.5.
  4. Use clips and not pins when securing your fabric to sew.

If you are interested in this fabric, you can click here to see a list of retailers where you can purchase it. Not only did Fibre Mood send me over this fabric, but I also received matching Mettler thread. The color is 0477. This is some of the best thread I’ve ever sewn with, and I will definitely purchase some to use in the feature.

Even though I was so stressed out making my dress, I am totally in love with the outcome. Now you all must know by now that I love a good ruffle hem and a flutter sleeve. This is not my first rodeo. Here is a tutorial I did on how to add a ruffle to a skirt hem and this is one of my recent flutter sleeve makes.

I hope you all enjoyed my Ginger as much as I do. I feel extra saucy in my dress and can’t wait to wear it out in the wild soon.

Until next time,
