Pattern Test: The Virginia Dress and Jacket Pattern from Duana Studio

Hi Guys! Sorry to inform you, but my next couple of blog posts will be related to 2022. I’ve still got some things I need to share from last year. Sorry. Today I’m sharing my last make of 2022 which is a pattern test for the Virginia Dress and Jacket from my girl Duana from Duana Studio.

Virginia Dress and Jacket Pattern

The Virginia Dress and Jacket Pattern is the latest pattern from Duana Studio (formally Duana DIY Patterns). I first saw this dress when Duana wore it when we met up in Atlanta for Melanated Fabrics Friendsgiving event. Can you guess why I loved it so much? You guessed it. It was the ruffles!! I love ruffles, especially when added to the hem of a skirt or dress. Ruffles are just it to me. Anyway, when she said this is going to be my next pattern, I told her I wanted to test it for her. I love everything about this pattern. The front zipper detail is just perfect and elevates this pattern to the next level. You can find the pattern here.

Virginia Dress and Jacket Pattern Review

Pattern Description:

Virginia Dress & Jacket Pattern

Pattern Sizing:

2 -28 I made a size 18 and I chose to make View A: Long sleeve zipper front dress with flounce.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

I thought my dress looked exactly like Duana’s photo.

Were the instructions easy to follow?

The instructions were very simple to follow and I think a beginner can make this dress. The hardest part is installing the zipper, but this is an exposed zipper which I think is easier to install than an invisible zipper.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

Umm, hello!! The flounce!! There isn’t anything I don’t like about this pattern.

Fabric Used:

I went to my local fabric store, A to Z Fabrics, looking for denim fabric and I found this stretch denim. The fabric has a great stretch and features a geometric design. This fabric can be used on either side, and this is what I loved to hate about it. I couldn’t decide which side to use but I finally decided on the dark side.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

I didn’t make any alterations to the pattern at all. I made a muslin first as I do with just about all my makes and I made the pattern just as instructed.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

Yes, I would make this pattern again. I may try the sleeveless version next, and I recommend this pattern to all my sewfriends to make.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, I would say if you love a good flounce and an easy make, then this is the pattern for you. I also love a pattern with options which this pattern has. You can make the sleeveless version or the jacket view. You can see some of my other Duana Studio patterns here, here and here.

Until next time!
